can you put 'possess familiar' on the quick bar?

actually, i've already put it on the quick bar, but it's always greyed
out...is there a reason for this, or is it just something that can't be used
from the quick bar?

You don't have you familiar summoned?

1. Your familiar is already summoned; or
2. Your familiar is dead/unsummoned but you've summoned your familiar
already in the current "rest/awake" period. You can only summon it once a
day.

To answer both of you: I added the "Possess Familiar" button to my quick bar
*after* I had already summoned my familiar, and it was greyed out and
wouldn't do anything. But why does this matter? Does this mean that I have
to add it to my quick bar *before* I summon it? Why would that make a
difference? Plus, if my familiar happens to die, does that mean I'd have to
re-add the button for the 'next' familiar I summon?

I just tested it. I summoned the familiar then place the possess Familar
button on the quick bar. It worked. Then unsummon the famliar and it was
greyed out.
Then. I resummoned my famliar and it wasn't re-greyed out.

I guess maybe remove it and then re-add it. Make sure you use possess
instead of by mistake using summon again. I've done than before.

Another weird possibility is that your alignment and familars aren't
compatable but that is module specific if at all and I don't think that's
your trouble.

Ok, I'll try it again. My alignment is LN, and my familiar is the panther,
so I don't think that's a problem. I can possess it through the radial menu,
though. I'll see if I can get the quick bar button to work.

I don't know why I typed the alignment thing. If you can suppmon it why
wouldn't you be able to possess it?

But is it possible not to be able to summon particular familiars? Do you get
told this when you try to choose it on level up?

The grayed out effect is commonly known as "disabled" state.

Your familiar is already summoned, and an arcane magic user has one and only
one familiar. So you cannot summon anymore familiar - thus the game disable
the button to reflect that.

No and no.

When you unsummon your familiar, or when it dies, the button *could* become
enabled.

I said "could" because there is another limitation - the ability, summon
familiar, can only be used once per rest. So if you summon your familiar and
it dies within 5 minutes, you'll have to wait a day/rest before you can
summon it again. To reflect the unability to summon familiar at that moment,
the game again disable the button.

It's basically the same thing I in my first reply... read carefully.

No?

The OP was about POSSESS Familiar not SUMMON Familiar. I am not sure of
the answer as I have yet to play a mage in NWN.

Yeah, I think there might be some confusion about what I was asking.

The first time I tried it out the possess only worked once. After that it
was greyed out.

I exited and restarted the game.

The next time I tried it, it changed the "possess" to a "summon" and when I
changed it back to the "possess", it worked fine.

Chalk it up to another (of many) bugs in NWN.
