Hi There,

Me and my GF are both Programmers , and am into web dev atm.
we're getting to the point where we really need a home server to deploy to, also for r use as a NAS and potentially wed server for any project we make publicly accessable. Really hat to give google or amazon money through firebase .etc
Probably linux (redhat) / vm (docker).

Ive been looking at refurbished server configurator sites selling 2014 bits and pieces ( https://www.bargainhardware.co.uk/) etc but was wondering whether it is worth it to put 500-600 into something like that, or better off just building something current with cheap consumer stuff.

Or perhaps something completely seperate, any help would be very helpful

I wouldn't go with an old server, you would probably get a lot more for your money getting a used consumer build and adding what else you need or even just using lightly used consumer parts off EBay or at local swap meets. A lot of people have old computer equipment not being used. Check with family and friends to start and see what might be available.

I understand and agree with you, But my heart is telling me how easy it would be to just buy this and then get this Serverand buy load of cheap sas drives SAS drives instead.

But thanks, i agree. New stuff is just so expensive maybe an older ryzen/threadripper build

Why will a desktop CPU not support your needs?
For a publicly available host, I would recommend AWS server. That way your personal network is not exposed.

well mostly because i fancied a one box solutions for web developement and home NAS use for both of use, so i want to have a generous amount of cores, and plus old SAS drives are really cheap and hot-swap drive bay is a whole lot easier to deal with than a consumer case . And yeah i have vast exp with platforms like firebase, but once again still need a network NAS and not have to worry about traffic quota's,

Ill probably end up building a consumer grade workstation and use it as a server but its gonna be a lot of effort , for 'newer' stuff.

Local box(es) for development and testing, AWS or similar for public webhosting.
Keep the world out of your internal LAN.

"Local" can be any box.

And your ISP may look poorly on the traffic for a public "web server".

To say nothing of the security aspect.
hmm a complicated solution is rarely the best, very well. Looks like google gets to keep my wallet for a little longer, google places api is so expensive though, even in the free tier i feel my life force draining

"old" SAS drives. If you can find unused SAS drives, OK. Used drives? NOPE.
What is the probability of a disk failure that requires a hot swap? Very low, IMO.

I was a professional software developer for 20 years. I then purchased servers for a living for 15 years. I do have experience.

As long as you have 128GB RAM with ECC, then you should be good for a VM host which can also do NAS functions.

That Dell has 12 cores plus hyperthreading to reach the "24 cores" in the listing. You can do that much more efficiently with an 6 core 7600X Ryzen, IMO.
The X5650 has a single threaded rating of 1300 and a multithreaded of 5700 so two would generously have 11,400.
A Ryzen 7600X has a single threaded rating of 4183 and a multithreaded of 28,600.
Twice as much performance from a 6 core CPU. You can significantly oversubscribe CPUs with VMs just not RAM. RAM is the limiting factor.

Don't be fooled by OLD "server" hardware. Those X5650 CPUs were released in 2010.

A few years ago, I had my QNAP NAS semi open to the world.
Strongly password protected, not hosting a web server for the random public, but rather just so I could access it from outside.

It got multiple hits per day, every day, from all over the planet. Just looking for a way in.
Russia, China, Ohio, Switzerland, Poland, etc, etc.

No one actually got in.

I shut it off after not too long.

If there were an actual way in...serving up a website, for instance...things might have been much worse.
That could have been a jumping off point to the rest of my LAN.
