bought a pc with a phenom ii x4 840t pcu and radeon's 7770HD gpu and was told that the 7770hd is a low end gpu. i'd just like to know if i can replace it with the 7970hd which i was told was a high end gpu? not a big pc guy, just started pc gaming. usually game on consoles. thanks

Size wise, there's no way of us telling if you don't tell us how much room there is in the case for the graphics card. :p

Socket wise, of course they fit - all graphics cards noadays use PCIe 2.0 or 3.0, and they're compatible with each other.

However, two things:
1) The 7970 requires two external power plugs - usually a 6-pin and an 8-pin, or else two 8-pins. Make sure your power supply has those.

2) Yes, the 7970 is a high-end gpu... it's the highest model that amd produces right now. It's also $400. What exactly are you trying to do with this computer? More than likely, you'd be better off spending half that and buying a 7870 XT.

The 7970 will fit unless its too big for your case. The question is do you have a power supply that can supply enough juice. What resolution are/do you plan on playing? Pretty big performance jump from the 7770 to the 7970 good chance you might be better off with a card in between like a 7850 or 7870 unless you are trying to play at max settings at 1080p.

im looking for something to save up for and upgrade my pc. i love my pcu. so i would like to upgrade my gpu in order to be able to run any game on the market like metro 2033 or black ops 2, BF3 and such. Running them all on max setting with a high frame rate. dont like being told my gpu is a low to mid range graphics card. i just dont know much about pc's but i know i could install a gpu np.

You should listen to these guys and not buy the top of the line card. As stated, a high end mid-range card will probably be most cost and performance effective.

Install it. Oh -- if you buy local all your concerns about fitment and such are non issues.

Enjoy games.

Save money. Do a whole bunch of research. Read articles.

Buy a new system in a year and a half.

For most games right now, having a faster quad core cpu(or one that can do at least 3-4 threads) is more important than a slower hexacore(or octacore). True the ps4 ( and likely the next xbox) will have 8 core amd processors, but those are based on the jaguar core(an update to the ultra portable bobcat core) and not based on bulldozer or piledriver. The stars architecture(a refinement of the K8 of athlon 64/x2 of old) has higher IPC. If you get something like a phenom II x4 970(BE) for around 100 and a decent cpu cooler like a cooler master hyper tx3, you can overclock to 4ghz+ on your mobo to help eliminate any potential cpu bottlenecks that might stymie the performance of a new gpu. Then, you go for a bit less powerful gpu than a hd7970(like a hd7870xt). The combined price of new cpu, cooler and hd7870xt will be about the same as a hd7970 alone(about 360 after rebate). I'm just going to figure you have a power supply that is up to it and that your case can fit a larger size graphics card.
