Can you turn on both hdmi to receiver and to tv and if so how

I have my sat and dvd hooked up to my receiver and the from monitor out to Tv now I have sound on the tv but can’t get sound on the receiver for the theater how can I fix this

Check the receiver manual. You may have to assign the HDMI connections (say HDMI 1) to inputs ( such as video 1) on the receiver and select the HDMI as your audio source. The input set up menu would be where you do this.
