I have a Toshiba Satellite E55t-A5320 which I bought January of 2014 and it came with 8.1 preinstalled from the factory (PK embedded in UEFI). Right now it's dual booted with 10 TP (9926) and openSUSE 13.2 x64, installed in UEFI mode. I wanted to know if I can refresh install the next build 10041 (i.e., keep files but remove apps) since I have had infrequent BSODs since 9879 and 9926. But this would theoretically rip out the upgrade chain from 8.1 so I'd have to pay the $100 or so for a 10 license. Is any of my reasoning wrong? Thanks

Solution

Yes I know I said WINDOWS 10 not technical preview. The question was Can you upgrade from a clean installed TP on a machine that came with 8.1. The answer is if you put 8.1 back on.

That means they bought the machine with Win 8.1 and did a clean install of Technical preview. He needs to put WIn 8.1 BACK to get a free upgrade.

Dual booting?

Current info is that the final release of 10 can be upgraded from the TP mostly seamlessly.
But the licensing is the issue. At some point you will have to enter or let the system detect a valid Win 8.1 license. Exact mechanism unknown at this point.

Recommend you revert that box back to 8.1, then do the upgrade to Win 10 final.

It won't recognize the product key embedded in UEFI?

Unknown.

I'll post this on the official Microsoft forums and see what responses I get.
