So a friend got me a geovision switch and said that it was used for ip cams.

What I'm trying to figure out is if it can be used for internet purposes and how I can do that. Searching google came up with nothing but how-to's for the cams.

Next time, GOOGLE MAKE MODEL PDF, BAM! everything you want to know about ANY electronics item.

POE switch, handles IP the same, just don't inject any power to it, and it only goes up to 100 mbit.

The biggest negative of that switch is that it is only a 100Mbit switch. I wouldn't use it in my network for anything EXCEPT for powering POE cameras.

Since it runs 802.3at PoE you can just ignore the PoE ability. Switches based on the official standards will only provide power to a device that requests it so run no risk of damage to your non poe equipment.

In general it should function like a dumb 8 port switch. You need to make sure nobody configured stuff like vlans etc on the box. Factory reset likely the best option to start. Most device will then run as a stupid 8 port switch.

I guess since you got it for free its ok but you can get 8 port 10/100 switches for between $10-$15 and 10/100/1000 for around $20.
