Can you use a wall jack to use Ethernet?

My router is in a different location than my PC and it would be a hassle to move it. I noticed that there is what seems to be an Ethernet jack near my computer. Can I connect the cable to the wall and run it to the computer just like that, or is there something else I would need to do? Thanks

Solution
Yes, as long as there is a ethernet (probably Cat5) cable directly running from the router to the wall jack (obviously the wall jack must be for ethernet, not phone) you would then be able to plug in a patch cable between the jack and your PC.

Just make sure the wiring standard is universal between all cables, as there are two very common wiring schemes for Cat5 (568-A and 568-B).

Hi,

1) ETHERNET:
Ethernet and phone connections look similar.
If you have an ETHERNET jack you can simply run a cable to your PC. Otherwise, no you can't connect to the phone jack directly. You need the MODEM first (MODEM may be part of the Gateway/Router unit).

2) Wi-FI:
You can buy a wireless USB/PCIe adapter and setup with our wi-fi router.

3) POWERLINE:
Already mentioned. It basically allows ethernet signals to run through the AC power replacing a long ethernet cable.

I'd go with wi-fi instead unless you need a high-speed connection. Usually wi-fi is sufficient.

Like magic? First thing u need to know is, is the jack ACTIVE? it is hooked up to something the other end? tough to do if you don't own/rent this place.
