ethernet comes from the basement and up to the office. there's an outlet there where the laptop is plugged in to the ethernet. running new wires is not something i want to do.

however i have a mycloud external drive which must be plugged into the router to work and i dont want the thing downstairs in the basement with the comcast router. though i guess in theory that is an option

so coming out of the wall in the office can i use something like this. wire out of wall connected to the switch then one wire to the laptop and one to the mycloud drive.

well depends ont he TV, if your movies are in the right format and your tv is a smart tv or using a device to make it so (rokus etc.) then its access the server name of the nas drive,.., for example I have a 6TB nas called //movies and that is how the tv accesses it from the smart menu and when I select the movie it plays :0
ty for the answer. there are 2 laptops in another room that are only connected via wifi. i'm assuming they can be backed up to the mycloud since it's all the same network?

meaning since they are connected to the router, they are good to go to be backed up through the router to the mycloud

since i'm on a roll here:

if i hook up something like synology NAS directly to my router with ethernet, but i use wifi with my laptop, will i be able to access the NAS

my guess is 'yes they are all in the same network' but i wanted to be sure.

how do you play your movies from NAS? id love to have a solution where i put the avi/mkv etc on NAS and import to my tivo

currently all files are on the laptop and i use pytivo to pull from the laptop to tivo. its not a bad way to do it but if they were all on NAS it would be better
