Hello, I'm trying to upgrade ONE of my computers with possibly using component from another older computer. The ONE I'm trying to upgrade as an AMD processor. I read on several posts that I cannot use the AMD motherboard to intall an Intel processor. IF SO, can I take the Intel motherboard from my old computer, swap it with the ONE computer's AMD motherboard, AND install an upgraded Intel i5 processor? I've researched upgrading graphics card and will be adding more RAM since it's currently 3 GB. Thank you!

Welcome to Tom's Hardware Forums!

As a general rule Intel sockets are different from AMD sockets. For this reason the two are not interchangeable.

Regarding what you want to do; you are using an Intel socket motherboard and trying to use an Intel CPU. Yes this is possible only if the motherboard socket is matched with the CPU socket. Example: both are LGA 1155.

Please list the make and model of the motherboard and the CPU and we can tell you for sure whether the two are compatible.

THANK YOU! OK, how about this:

Let's assume the "Intel socket motherboard" (from old computer) matches the "new Intel CPU (i5)" socket that I'm planning to purchase. I understand enough that I need to make sure the new graphics card (going to purchase) & additional RAM (currently 3 GB, so want at least total 6 GB) that I'm going to install is adequate/compatible with the new Intel CPU (i5).

NOW, bare with me while I double check with you :) I want to switch my "AMD socket motherboard" (with AMD CPU which I want to discard) with the "Intel socket motherboard" (from old computer) with the "new Intel CPU (i5)." Technically, I "should" be able to install that in my Compaq computer shell, correct?

Thank you for your help!!

PS I looked into upgrading my laptop to be gaming-worthy, but found out how expensive that would be!

If you are asking if you can put an intel chip in an amd mobo, you cannot. If you are talking about just being able to mount the mobo in the case in place of the intell board, yes i dont see why not. But both Intel and AMD boards house different socketted mobo's.

Oh you're talking about a laptop? If so, I wouldn't know, but I think that my answer would be almost definitely not. If the laptopl was designed for intel, I just dont see why they would design it to fit an amd board.

I understand that you want to use the Intel motherboard that housed the Pentium 4 CPU; however, each motherboard has limitations as to what types of CPUs it can be matched with.

The Pentium 4 3.2 GHz CPU has a 478 socket - http://ark.intel.com/products/27489/Pentium-4-Processor-Extreme-Edition-supporting-HT-Technology-3_20-GHz-2M-Cache-800-MHz-FSB - this means that the board will accommodate only CPUs with 478 sockets. The new Intel CPU that you are considering is i5 and this has an LGA 1155 socket and will not work with the motherboard from the Pentium 4 computer.
