I don't know what are the printer-making companies
doing but they shure do screw up a lot. It is not
just HP or Epson, so far I am avare all makes
behave pretty much the same.
I use or have access to:
- 2x HP InkJets attached to LPTs,
- 2x HP DeskJets attached to HP printservers,
- 1x HP Laser which is also on a network,
- 4x Epson StylusColor on a network.
They all do 'work' - but...
don't try to cancel print job!!!
What I want is ULTIMATE ability to CANCEL all
print jobs and this shall have IMMEDIATE effect.
As a programmer (not just for PC, I do work with
various control systems including embeded controllers),
I simply do not understand why companies like HP and
Epson paying their designers to do such crappy job.
It is probably because nobody seam to do a decent review!
All I see in a printer reviews is:
- resolution and/or print quality
- speed (pages per minute)
- ink consumption (optional)
I have NEVER seen any review that tackles
ACTUAL usability. Sure they can print.
Thats what printers do. How about this:
- time factor (response time)
- loading capability
Time factor is important, but time factor
is NOT just number of pages per minute, it is
also time printer takes to do ANY task.
One very common task is cancelling print jobs
and this is f***ing long. It takes at least
minutes but it CAN last an HOUR!
Loading ability is something never mentioned
but it is very important. One printers is
only as good as combination hardware+driver.
Sure printers can print, sure they can print
50+ pages, but what I frequently find is
that they give-up under load specially if
on a network and you sent multiple jobs.
Example:
Currently, an HP DeskJet 1120 ('Professional Series')
on a printer server (HP 170x) has some 50% chance
to quit or screw up if you send 2 or 3 simultaneous
jobs (each job is mere 2-3 pages of text with maybe
one or two embeded pics).
Imagine what happens when I send large job (PLC ladder
program which is some 200-300 pages).
I hope TH reads this and do some printer review soon.
A good one...
