Cancelled phone line but can still use data on Verizon

I had my line cancelled and verizon leaves the sim card in there. I wanted to check that the phone wouldnt take any calls or texts and it wouldnt as suspected. I had realized that my phone still said 4GLTE so i decided to take it off of wifi and search something up and for some reason it still worked. How is this possible.

like 3 months ago. (Its not a problem im ok with it. Its just that it confuses me and i would like to know)
