Cannot achieve similar oc on a diffrent motherboard

My last motherboard (msi z170 sli +) died on me and is currently in RMA, i got a gigabyte z170 hd3 to hold me over, when i went to oc my system i couldnt achieve nearly the same overclock. what causes this?

VRM, system agent voltage, different bios....about a million different things could contribute to it. Some motherboards need higher voltages to achieve the same clock you'd have on another board. Some will run the same voltage, but you'd need to adjust the system agent voltage, or the LLC...or use adaptive voltage. Even motherboards of the exact same manufacturer and type can be slightly different. Just the way it works.
