Cannot connect to internet through LAN on wireless router

My wireless router appeared to have failed - computer could no longer connect even when LAN was connected from router to computer. I bought a new router and still have the same problem. Internet is fine when connected directly from modem to computer, but router does not recognize signal. Is there something wrong with my modem??

Do you know anything about IP addressing and what LAN IP you should be getting, and understand DHCP? Because we need to know all of that in order to troubleshoot your problem.

I'm hopelessly uninformed, unfortunately. I understand if I'm a lost cause. But if you're up for a challenge.....the internet works fine when the router is not in the mix. I've power cycled 20 times and tried new ethernet cables. It seems like the modem can't communicate with the router.
