Cannot copy from external hard disk to laptop

Hi,
I'm using 1TB western digital external disk. I have been using it since 5 years without any problem. Suddenly when I tried to copy some data (bulk data) from the disk to laptop, it starts fast and then freezes in the middle. Even the cancelling of the copy is not working for 10-15 minutes. I have to unplug the disk. Whereas when I connect I could see the data inside the disk and also I can open files individually from laptop for editing. Kindly help me in recovering the data.

I'm sorry to hear about your issues with the WD external drive. I'd strongly recommend you to test the HDD's health and SMART status by running the QUICK and EXTENDED tests from our Data LifeGuard Diagnostics for Windows. I'd also suggest you try copying those files on another computer and see how the WD external HDD will behave there. Have you also tried using a different USB cable with it, just to check if the transfer speed will improve?
