I have two HP 8460p laptops and am trying to connect them to my homegroup that is used for other devices.
This includes several printers plus a desktop computer.
All the computers are Windows 7.

When I try to connect the Windows 10 computers to the homegroup it tells me I must create a new password, but when I try to do this it will not let me.

If I go into network and sharing on the control panel of the Windows 10, it says the computer is connected to a public network.

On all the Windows 7 computers it lists it as private.
Both display the correct network connection, (name).

Can someone tell me what might be causing this problem?

Thank you for your enlightenment, Colif.
To answer your question, yes all my computers and printers were on when I tried to create a new home group name.
I do not have the latest version of Windows 10 and believe this is probably the reason I was not able to create a new home group password and why the existing one was not recognized.
Your insight into the problem is greatly appreciated!
Thanks, so much!

One possible fix is for every PC in the homegroup to leave it which will in effect delete the old homegroup. Then create a new one

Leave your homegroup. You can't delete a homegroup, but if everyone leaves the homegroup it will be gone. You can then set up a new homegroup if you'd like.
