Hi!

I am trying to find the i7-4790t processor in Canada (preferably) without paying a big markup over currency exchange adjusted Intel price. I have found it for $379 at amazon.com (in the us) which seems high since the intel price is $303.

As an alternative, could I underclock an i7-4790k and get the same performance (speed and power) as the 97-4790t?

Thanks . . .

Phil

Hi Phil!

I assume that Tea Urchin is correct that the S and T series processors are power optimized, but to quickly answer your question, you can get an i7-4790 (non-K) and underclock. (I imagine undervolt too).

I set my 4790 to max multiplier of 30 to test for you, instead of the 36 it was at previously. I can upload CPU-ID photos and do a proper validation if you like. So, yes you can manually underclock a CPU, even a non-k series!

Edit: I just looked around my BIOS some more. There was some greyed out voltage options, and some that are available. Unfortunately, I don't know a heck of a lot about changing voltages on a CPU, so it's not all totally clear to me. Someone, please clarify to end confusing.

I lowered one of the only voltage options I had available to me (from 1.900V to 1.890V) but CPU-Z doesn't even register my CPU as getting anywhere near that high to begin with.

I'm going to change my BIOS back, then go to bed. Good night :)

Edit 2: By the way, I have an AsRock Z97E-ITX/ac motherboard, in case someone that wants to explain it to me needed to know that info.
