Cannot get ethernet ports in house to work. (Pictures)

I went to the store today and I purchased an Ethernet cable in hopes of making all of the Ethernet ports in my house hot. I plugged it into the wall and then into my router as you can see here:

After that I tried plugging a laptop into a different Ethernet ports around the house and got no connection. Then I went to the Ethernet junction box and went to check all of the connections and it seems like everything is plugged in and connected properly as seen here:

Not really sure what else I can do at this point so I hope that some of you guys can steer me in the right direction, any help would be much appreciated thanks.

Also I am not sure which wire runs into the box all i know is that it has a purple casing, the hot one that is.

It's not uncommon to see Cat5/6 for telephone lines. The two boxes do not look like a switch or router which would be needed to make a network. They look like the telephone panel. Are there any other unfinished lines in the box?

No as far as I know every single one of those lines ends at an ethernet walljack.

Those are telephone connections. You need to completely start over in this box. Not sure why they would use rj45 in the remote rooms for telephone. Be very sure they are RJ45 and not RJ11.

This is what a ethernet patch panel looks like that you need for the central end.

You would then run short patch cables from the patch panel to a switch to connect them. Ethernet is point to point and must have a electronic device like a switch to run all the ports, you can not just hook the wires together.

Niether box is a router/switch. below is the amazon link to the product on the left. It's just a telephone patch panel. I could not find the link for the item to the right, but if you look at the ebay link it shows a picture of the back. Clearly not a router or switch. RJ-45 cables are used for a variety of reasons, no always networking.

The gray wires to the right look like unfinished cable lines. can you take a picture of the ends of those cables? If you're sure that the wires in those panels are the same ones that go to the wall you can repurpose them into a home network. The tools to do so aren't that expensive. But as it stands it's not going to work as you wanted it to.

Disclaimer. You will mess things up. The advice I give is purely for educational purposes you are responsible for anything that may occur as a result of it's applicaiton.

1. Use a flat head screw driver to remove the Panel cover from the ethernet port in the room you wish to "activate" Make sure the wire header is finished. (has wires attached) You should be able to remove the header from the panel then pop the top off. to inspect it. Check to see if standard A of B is used

2. Once you have that info, use the tone locator. plug in the ethernet to the jack and use the other device to find the other end. Now you should be able to just pull the wire up and out of the connectors. To make it easier. install the brown and the blue pairs back into the blue and orange slots using the punch down tool.

3. Next you need half a ethernet cable about 6 to 12 inches in length should be long enough. You can make one using the ethernet heads and crimp tool or use a donor cable and cut it the proper length from the one end.

4. Note the standard used in the first step. If it's standard B then simply match the cables from the 2nd step to the donor cable, use the wire connectors to join them. If it's A swap the pairs. Orange to green, white/orange to white/green.

Pretty much that's it. install the ethernet in the panel to a switch. IN the room with the modem/router, run a ethernet cable from 1 of the 4 ethernet ports to the wall and that should take care of everything

Your first step is to examine the jacks in the remote rooms and see how they are wired. If you are lucky they have proper ethernet jacks wired using a standard pattern. Otherwise you will need to buy some rj45 keystones to replace them

I would not put RJ45 plug type of connectors on either end anymore. This is done by professionals sometime but it take skill to put those ends on properly.

If you buy keystones and the patch panel I linked in my previous post from a home improvement type stone like home depot they have made these easier for a non techie to get them installed. You do not need any special tools. They include a crappy plastic punch down tool. It does the job but of course does not compare to a pro tool.

It is pretty easy you match the wire colors on the jacks and panel and it should just work. You do not need to learn anything about wire patterns just make them all the same.

You would then buy a number of short commercial ethernet cables and cable between the patch panel and a switch.

Your largest issue I suspect will be figuring out which wire goes where. You will need some form of cable tester. The simpler but more labor intensive solution is to just terminate all the wires and plug them all into the switch. They should then just all work. You should be able to see which port lights on the switch when you plug a pc in so you can in effect use the switch to figure out which cable goes where.
