ISP has delivered a new modem.

When I get an ethernet cable and plug it direct from modem into my laptop. I get an internet connection fine.

However, when I get an ethernet cable and connect from the new modem to the 16-port TP-link Switch - none of the computers can get an internet connection?

Solution

I would recommend first checking the IP address configuration of the switch. Set it to the same subnet as your new modem router, or set it for DHCP. (I'm assuming you have tried power cycling the switch, but if not you may want to try that first.)

Then check for any port restrictions, particularly the port you are using to connect to the Huawei.

There are quite a number of other settings to check, but this is a good place to start checking.

You need to add a router to your network.

The modem allows only one IP address from your ISP to be assigned to a single device on the network.

A router connected behind the modem will allow more IP addresses by assigning private IP addresses to all connected devices.

A network switch does little more than provide more physical ports.

I'm only going by the information you provided, so I assumed it was a "modem" only to which you were referring. It is still common for ISPs to install modem-only devices, at least in the U.S.

A single device connection problem is also a common issue when using a modem-only, hence the answer given.

So if you have a modem-router combo, you can use ipconfig to find if your devices are getting a valid private IP address when connected to the switch.

Also, are you able to ping the modem-router when connected to the switch?

You may want to provide the make and model of your network devices for the benefit of others in solving your problem.

OK thanks.

The Switch is a TP-Link model # TL-SG2216

the modem-router is a Huawei HG658c

This is a real mystery to me. Once the modem-router is connected to the switch...it should just give an internet
connection right?

You stated that the ISP delivered a new modem. Did the switch work with your previous modem? Are the lights on the switch indicating a successful connection to both the Huawei and the PC?

Since that particular TP-Link is a managed switch, there may be a configuration setting preventing Internet access. You may need to refer to the owner's manual, or at worst perform a factory reset of the switch.

Budda, the connection lights seem fine.

old modem worked perfectly with this switch.

Without doing a reset, what might I try first in terms of configuration changes?
