Cannot get onto the computer.

My netbook can be switched on under Window 8.1 and could bring up the desktop menu. After that any mouse click will not bring up the internet (using google) or open any folders. In other words cant get to anywhere. I tried switching it off and on but still the problems persists. Short of actually resetting it to factory level, what else can be done to salvage my data. Please advise.

how does the netbook connect to the internet? wired or wireless? is that your internet connection or your work or schools?

My netbook is connected wirelessly to internet by my home router. I dont suppose this is the problem. There is no way of opening browser, files or anything using the mouse.
