Cannot get stable overclock on e8400 please help

Hey guys im having a really hard time trying to get a stable overclock on my new pc build the components I have are:
asus p5kr motherboard
corsair xms2 800mhz ram 5-5-5-18
hiper 580w psu
intel e8400 e0
gigabyte hd4870 1gb

I could get the system to boot into windows with a 1.2875 vcore and eveything else on stock with everything thats needs to be disabled, disabled. But round 10 - 15 minutes into a stress test I either get a blue screen or the desktop background turns black and the computer freezes up. I tried putting the voltage of the ram up to 2.0v but same result. I then upped the nb votage to 1.50v and the stress test lasted for 30 minutes before the same thing happened. Under full load the temps are around 65 degrees.

I would really like to be able to say I got my e8400 clocked at a stable 4ghz but as im new to overclocking i don't know where to go from here. I hope one of you guys could point me in the right direction.

You should bring your NB voltage down to around 1.33v. Go to core temp and tell me what your VID is. You might need to up the core voltage. Can you show me a link to the ram that you have?
 
I guess what I am saying is that your NB voltage is way too high. You should be able to get it stable at 3.6Ghz with NB voltages around 1.35V. Also with ram timings of 5-5-5-18 at 800Mhz you should have your voltages at around 1.8V. Try upping your cpu core voltage to 1.35V at 4.0 Ghz and if that does not work then up the voltage in small increments until you get to 1.40V. It is a lot of trial and error and no two systems are the same.

So basically what i have to do is concentrate on the processor and its vcore rather than ram and nb voltages? At 1.35v vcore the system wouldnt get past the vista loading screeen but booted into vista with 1.375v then only lasted 13 minutes on the stress test (im using everest btw). Once again everything went black apart from the task bar, my problem now is at that voltage the cpu maxed 72 degrees but hung around 68 degress at full load is it still safe to go to a higher voltage? Also i set the nb voltage back to auto.

Too hot dude. What cooler are you running ?

My E8400 will not pass prime at 4.0 on anything under 1.3825 vcore . This is with stock NB voltage and loose timings 5-5-5-15-30. I have had it as high as 1.42 at 1.39##. Before you go any further you need to get your temps in check.
 
the cooler im using is a silverstone nt05 its pretty crap to be honest, i thought it would have done the job though as people were saying they were getting 4ghz on stock coolers and ines is just a bit better than them (or atleast i thought that). Also my processor is the e0 revision i thought they were easier to overclock are they not?

How is the airflow in your case ? Try re-seating your HSF and make sure you apply a nice thin even layer of Arctic Siler I would definitely look into a better cooling solution though. I think max temp on the 8400 is 73C. Overclocked to 4.0 @1.38v you should idle 35-40 and max temp 55-60 . ( of course depending on ambient conditions and your case )


Yes it is true , I have seen 4.0 on a stock fan with acceptable temperatures. Each chip is different though and each application has it's own set of variables. So you can't really treat one as a benchmark. The end result will never be the same.

Again you are correct. The EO rev. offers a little more headroom with temps.
 
airflow is retty good id say i have 5 80mm fans in total 2 at the front and one on the side blowing air in and 2 at the back blowing air out. the ambient temperature here is around 21 degrees celcius i would say, last time i tried to reseat the heatsink i just kept the same thermal grease on aalthough it was only on for a day. could that be the problem?
 
Yes. You should always clean off and replace thermal grease every time you take off the heatsink from the cpu even if you only had it on for 5 seconds.
 
Well your temps are high so we are trying to point a finger. Without elaborating I think you just found the culprit. You absolutely need to re-apply the compound. Do so and post after a stress test. Make sure you completely clean each surface.
 
I think that did it, I cleaned the compound from the heatsink and the rocessor and applied it again now using the exact settings that i stated produced a max temp of 72 degrees is now producing a max temp of 62 degrees, the stress test has only been going on for 12 minutes, im still expecting the comp to crash though since the same settings made it crash previously. So whats next up the vcore one more notch until i get it stable at 3.7 ghz ? Thanks for the hel so far guys its really appreciated by the way.
 
Hi guys I ended up setting the vcore to 1.3825 and upped the processor to 4ghz and ran a stress test, after 6 hours of running it I thought brilliant it must be stable now. Turn on crysis the game freezes almost straight away. Temps on the stress test showed a max of 68 degrees. Also the computer will now boot up at 4ghz under any voltage unlike before. I have a feeling that the voltages are not actually being set or something
 
Ok well it seems that is your vdroop but the delta seems way to large. Try OC to 4.0 at 1.3825 again ( in bios ) and tell me what CPUZ indicates in windows.
