cannot get windows updates

i have windows 10 professional. i noticed that i cannot get windows to check for updates. i keep getting the following message.

We couldn't check for updates because you aren't connected to the Internet. Make sure you have a mobile data or WiFi connection and try again.

any help is appreciated as this is annoying. my wifi is working fine.

Can you browse the web fine? Open command prompt and type "ping google.com" without the quotes you should get a successful reply.

do have the settings for 'metered' internet access turned on? I believe if you do it will ignore updates to spare your bandwidth, at least for awhile.

yes i can browse the web fine. and i can ping google.com fine

metered internet is switched off. just check

just went back into the windows update and its downloading a update. i dont know why its started working after 2 weeks. now just need to somehow get the windows 10 1511 update to come in. thanks everyone for your help here
