Hi,
I used to have a 2.5 Intel SSD 120GB with windows installed on it, until it died one morning and I my PC kept kicking me to BIOS whilst not detecting the SSD. I assumed the SSD had died and I am quite sure of it, I switched the all the SATA ports around and to no surprise, the SSD had officially died. Not surprised as it was fairly old and I saw it was time for an upgrade anyway.
I ordered a brand new Western Digital 250GB NVMe M.2 SSD off of Newegg and inserted it into my ROG Maximus XI Hero (W-fi) onto the bottom M.2 slot, as the top slot was being used by another NVMe M.2 SSD for games (480GB). Since my PC had no OS I figured that I would install Windows onto my Western Digital SSD and so I could keep my games drive separate from my OS drive. So when I began to install windows, I inserted a USB stick with a fresh windows installation and selected Upgrade by accident, to which no surprise it failed since there was no copy of Windows on this SSD.
I tried booting off of the USB with the windows installation on it again and this time chose Custom so I could install a fresh new copy of windows onto the SSD, to which that failed as well, and I got blue screened. So I booted off the USB one more time, deleted all the data via the windows installation manager on the 250GB SSD, and tried to freshly install windows from there. Neither worked.
I've gotten a variety of different blue screens from all my methods of trying to fix it. I followed another guide listed here and followed these steps which also didn't work. I reset my BIOS to default settings and everything but windows will not install. Currently I have unplugged all other drives (including the other M.2 drive which contains all of my games) and right now the 250GB M.2 is the only one sitting in my PC.
I've gotten a mix of the following blue screen errors:
0xc0000034
SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE
BAD_POOL_CALLER
And every time my PC restarts to finish its installation of windows, it says "The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error..." etc and I cannot finalize my installation of windows.
Below is a list of all of my key components, if it helps.
ROG MAXIMUS XI HERO
i7-8700K
G.SKILL TRIDENT Z 4x8 32GB 3000Mhz RAM
GTX 1080 AMP! Edition (Zotac)
Drives:
Western Digital Black NVMe M.2 250GB (The one I want to install my OS on.)
Corsair MP300 NVMe M.2 480GB (Unplugged)
Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200 RPM 3.5" (Unplugged)
Seagate Barracuda Compute 2TB 7200 RPM 3.5" (Unplugged)
I've been back and forth for hours trying every method of trying to get a fresh copy of windows. Each time, Windows throws a different error at me. Feel free to ask any more questions about my parts if helps come up with a solution.
Some notable things:
I did just finish recabling my PC since I just got a new power supply, but on first boot to BIOS, everything powered up fine.
The BIOS reads the 250GB SSD as "Windows Boot Manager" yet when I boot from it, the windows installation will fail.
When my original SSD died, the entire screen froze, then the system restarted itself after a few minutes. Then it would only boot to BIOS.
On my first attempt at installing Windows, CSM was turned enabled.
I know this post is a little long but I wanted to try and be as detailed as possible to help search for any answers. Anything helps.
Also, not sure if this went under "Motherboards" or "Windows 10" — Sorry in advance!
