Just finished building a new computer and I cannot get Windows 7 installed on it. Not sure if this belongs in the storage forum, but thought I would start it here.

Build:
Intel Core i7-5960X 3.0GHz 8-Core Processor
Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB (4 x 8GB) DDR4-2666 Memory
Samsung XP941 Series 512GB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive
MSI GeForce GTX 980 4GB Video Card
Asus X99-DELUXE ATX LGA2011-3 Motherboard
Corsair H100i 77.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler
EVEVGA 750W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply
Asus DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS DVD/CD Writer

When I try to install windows I get the following error:
cDsppyQ.png

BIOS recognizes the drive properly (E1: SAMSUNG MZHPU512HCGL-00004):

I updated the BIOS to version 1103 to see if that would fix but that did not help.

Where do I start to get Win 7 installed?

Solution
Windows is now installing !

1. I disconnect everything from motherboard except CPU, memory, graphic card and M.2 SSD.
2. In Bios, restore all settings to default.
3. Change SATA mode to AHCI in PCH Storage Configuration under Advanced.
4. SATA Support: All Devices
5. Enable CSM and set

Boot Device Control: UEFI and Lagacy OPROM
Boot from Storage Devices: Legacy Only
Boot from Network Devices: Legacy Only
Boot from PCI-E/PCI Expansion Devices: UEFI Driver First

6. Disable Secure Boot (Set to Other OS)
7. Set Booting order: 1st SAMSUNG M.2 SSD, 2nd DVD-ROM
8. Create USB Boot disk that will boot to UEFI. http://www.thomas-krenn.com/en/wiki/Creating_Windows_UEFI_Boot-Stick_in_Windows
You need to make sure that HDD boot as at the top of your boot list i had a similar problem about a month ago that solved it. If all else fails reset the bios as it will make it auto top to do this take out the battery on the motherblard for 30 seconds.

Folks often have trouble installing Windows 7 compared to Windows 8.1 . Have a look at this comment thread on our blog and see if that helps:

i had tried that approach but it required installing the "shell.efi" (or similiar titled file) to the root directory of the usb flash, and i have no idea what that means - i'm "larryccf" over on asus forums and you and Hiker helped me - hiker's link to the win 7 worked, albeit a little slower using a win 7 dvd but it got me over the hump

Ksuchewie - these steps you listed may work for that M.2 drive with a PCIe adapter in a PCI slot, but my motherboard has an actual place for the drive. So, when I click "boot from PCI-E Expansion Devices" it does nothing.

IF RamCity's suggestion didn't work, i finally got mine installed

strongest suggestion i can make is to make sure you have the latest BIOS update installed on your board (and ASUS just released a whole new batch of updates less than a week ago), 2nd instruction, and not all the postings on the web emphasize this, disconnect all other SSDs and HDDs before beginning. then these steps detailed on the asus forum worked for me. And here's a link to instructions of how to create a bootable USB flash drive with win 7

Since the mods removed my link, here's the info that might help you:

I spent several hours on the weekend installing windows 7/8.1 on both the XP941 and SM951 on an ASUS X99-A

1. After setting back to defaults, the only change you need to make is change your CSM settings to 'UEFI Driver first' in the PCIe-EX storage section before you'll be able to successfully install Windows on either the XP941 or SM951. To get here, press F7 for advanced configuration, then navigate to the 'Boot' submenu, then down to CSM (Compatibility Support Module) and press Enter. Then, navigate to 'Boot from PCI-E / PCI Expansion Devices' and select 'UEFI Driver First' from the menu. (default selection is 'Legacy Only'). Then navigate to the Exit menu, select 'Save Changes and Reset'.

2. Now, assuming you've used Rufus to make a USB boot drive for windows, just press F8 when you boot the machine, and select the option beginning with 'UEFI' that looks like your USB drive. This will get the windows install properly.

3. **NOTE** - this only works with X99-A BIOS 1402, so beware of the very newest ASUS bios releases for other motherboards. I personally successfully installed both Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 with X99-A BIOS 1402 (rel. Mar 27th, 2015) with the XP941/SM951 in the M.2 socket or the Lycom DT-120 adapter. Using version 1702 (rel. Apr 15th, 2015), I was constantly thwarted with the message 'windows cannot be installed to this drive' and could not get past it.

4. Once windows has installed there is no need to mess with the boot order. The default option will be 'Windows Boot Manager' and your bios should show which particular device this points to.

I have the same problem with ASUS X99-PRO/USB3.1 & Samsung SM951 256GB. MB has the latest BIOS 1901 and it m.2 drive works fine, I can boot with a windows 10 uefi usb stick and create the required partitions. But with Windows 7 x64 it doesn't work! The m.2 drive does not appear at all in installation.
What I can do????? I spent 3 days trying, 've lost sleep and really tired trying.
This is the first time I need help setting a new system and I'm really frustrated because I read in forums many people had problems but they managed to install Windows 7 they were able to see the drive I cannot!

Please help....

I had the same issue with the X99-S and pcie Samsung NVMe drive. Now Windows 10 will detect the drive but Windows 7 won't, but I need to install Windows 7 to upgrade to Windows 10.
My solution was to install Windows 7 on an SSD or mechanical drive. Once W7 is installed run the Windows 10 upgrade, get it registered to the hardware.
Once Windows 10 is linked to the hardware you can now create a Windows 10 install disc or USB drive and then do a clean install.

If you don't want to install W10 you could create an image of the W7 install and then restore it to the M.2 drive. I tested Macrium Reflect and that was able to detect the M.2. There is also a NVME patch for Windows 7 which can be installed once installed

windows 7 does not have drivers for M.2 drives. If you have W7 SP1 installed Microsoft was a hotfix for this issue. There is a second hotfix that may be needed. There are two types of M.2 drives - sata and pci interfaces. check your MB to make sure you have the correct drive. you will also have to change the boot sequence and possibly other changes in the bios. on my mb , installing a M.2 disables the PCI slots
