Cannot log in after performing scheduled chkdsk

ASUS F5VL laptop running XP Pro

I used "my computer", tools to schedule a chkdsk. It asked if that should be done when the system next booted, and I then proceeded to reboot.

The chkdsk ran clean, and reported same just before Windows started. I'm now at the login screen and when I click on my user it does not open the login form. I can move the mouse pointer around but when I click the login form does not appear.

Any ideas?

Just wanted to state additional details:

If I power down and re-boot, it reports that a chkdsk has been scheduled and attempts to do that again. If I allow it to run, or press a key to bypass the chkdsk, I get to the login page but again clicking the user does not open the login form.

I have tried booting in safe mode and that did not help - it gets stuck after listing many lines of text to the screen.

I hit F8 to get to the boot options screen and select safe mode with command prompt.

The screen displays many drivers that are loaded and stops at windows\system32\drivers\mup.sys

Is there another way to get to a command prompt?

What's frustrating is that I just RMA'd the laptop last week because it wouldn't boot, if I tried to boot into safe mode, it stopped here at that time as well. They returned it, I upgraded Windows to SP3, installed all my data and apps, and here I am with a problem again. Livid...

We used a WinXP CD in repair mode to get a DOS command. CHKDSK /R did in fact repair something. We now are able to get the password prompt screen. However, the password is now rejected.

The tech at my local computer store has an emergency CD that allows you to boot into Linux and reset the password. Some systems, such as mine, are incompatible with the video drivers. It put up a screen that prompts the user to reset the password, but on my system (of course!) the screen was garbled so we were unable to see or follow the instructions.

So I'm stuck. How do I reset the password other than reloading XP AGAIN?

FWIW, this machine had a problem booting (see here for that story http://tinyurl.com/lmf57f) so it was sent back to ASUS under an RMA. I got it back last Friday with XP SP2 circa December 2007 loaded. I spent Fri-Mon upgrading XP to SP3 and all following patches, loading all my data and applications, and so on. During that time I had used http://www.partition-tool.com/ to resize C and D partitions, and now that my data was all loaded I wanted to chkdsk/defrag before beginning to actively use it. And that's how I happened to be where we are now.

Can you boot into safe mode now? If so, you should be able to create a new user account with administrator rights. Then log into windows with that account. Then you should be able to delete the other account and take ownership of that account's files.

When I boot normally, I have 2 users defined. I just booted into safe mode and the login screen shows 3 users - the normal 2 + administrator. All 3 users share the same password, none allow me to log in.

Options are "safe mode", "safe mode with networking", "safe mode with command prompt". I selected the first option. Correct?

For this purpose, the first option is fine. The Administrator account is the account is the one you want. There normally isn't a password on that account and has administrator rights. You should be able to use this account to create a new account for yourself.

When I get to the Windows login screen I get the 3 users. I click on administrator and it wants a password and won't allow me to proceed without it. I know what I specified for that entry and it is not accepting the value.
