Cannot play any games online (COD2,FIFA world)

Hi guys,
I'm not able to play any games online. I can run fifa world, but it wont connect me to an online opponent (keeps showing the "connecting to opponent,please wait" but nothing happens.
I'm not able to play with my friends either. any idea what the problem might be?
I'm not using any modem.

I meant router*
Im not using a router. the cable is directly connected to my computer.
