Cannot reconnect to windows 8.1 when trying to run file history

My G drive is a 1tb hdd and is recognised by both windows and bios but when trying to run file history, windows says the drive is disconnected and needs to be reconnected. The drive has been formatted. How can I reconnect when it appears that it is connected?
