cannot renew ip address at one place but can at another

i have a computer using xp i hook it up at my house, works fine, i take it to another location i will not renw the ip so i cannot connect to internet

Are you connecting wired or wirelessly? In Control Panel>Internet Options>Connection tab>LAN button, is there a tick in "Automatically detect settings"? Also, in the Properties of the cnonection under TCP/IP are there manual settings or is it set to be fixed automatically?
