I think windows may have updated and now pressing sleep in the start menu only logs me out of my user account, it does not put the computer to sleep. Any solutions? it worked fine yesterday.

Solution
Open Device Manager and look for any devices with an error or exclamation point.

I've had Windows Update "update" drivers before to a version that just causes problems.
Open power management settings and go to the advanced settings for your power plan. Turn off the USB selective suspend setting and PCI Express Link State Power Management, reboot, and try sleeping.

Beyond that, I think I'd just system restore it and double-check what updates it installs next time.

It restores the Windows files and settings to a snapshot of what it looked like at an earlier time. It often fixes issues for me caused by driver/Windows updates or botched program installations.

To access it, just type System Restore into the start menu on a Win Vista/7/8 system.
