Cannot tether with samsung s4 on laptop dell d610 xp sp3

I have installed the tetherxp.inf but still can't connect. Tried usb and wifi hotspot. Have no proble using wifi networks but can't tether using my phone (samsung galaxy s4 -jelly bean 4.2.2). Please help!

It would be simple if it wasn't a Samsung but they seem to insist on using their Kies software but I would have thought the Dell could see a new wifi network if you created one as a portable hotspot though. Have you tried adding such a network manually? Are any wireless networks visible in the Dell?

Hi Saga,

Sorry I should have been more explicit. I can detect my phone network on the laptop.wifi.when I click connecy, nothong much happens. Then I get "unable to connect" error.

I tried to install Kies many times but at thend of the installation I get a "Kies has encountered a problem" Microsoft error so can't use the software.

Does it get to the stage where it asks for the network's security key or give up trying before that stage? If it does, are you sure you're inputting the right key? I only ask because I know it's a pain in the rear putting in mixed alpha-numeric characters on a 'phone keyboard.

Yes, I've also tried even with an open network i.e with no password but same result. The usb drivers have been installed. I can save documents, music files from laptop to phone and vice versa. It just won't connect although it detects the network.

I should add I've never had any problems using wifi from libraries, cafes etc...

I get that bit and that's why I wondered if it could connect the other way around - with the 'phone providing the wireless hotspot to create a network for the laptop to join. It's only for an experiment and if it works it only confuses the issue further but at least it means they're communicating in areas outside of file transfer.

Quick thought - is the network only secure by WEP. If the phone thought the network was insecure (as when you tried with no security) could it be refusing to play.

The laptop sees the connection but I then get an error which says "unable to connect". I have tried so many things.
I tried to connect the phone on another phone (iphone) - same issue. I tried to connect the iphone on my S4 - same thing.

My only suggestion is to take it to the shop from where you bought it and challenge them to connect it to one of their laptops to prove is isn't a dud.
