I had a friend download his iTunes library from his Apple to my new passport for mac external drive. I was able to connect the passport to my Apple desktop just fine…the icon shows. But, the file with the music is empty…but I know it's there. I'm somewhat a computer novice…does anyone have any advice as to what I'm doing wrong?

Oh, then I guess you meant that you had the iTunes file of their library. I was thinking of the actual mp3 files of the songs in their library. My mistake- sorry. Unfortunately, iTunes uses distinct IDs for each library, so you can't really import it to your own without using third-party software (which is usually costly). But you can enable sharing from their computer and add it to yours that way. The option for that is in the "sharing" tab in preferences:

Or you can copy their library's direct files onto your passport and use the "add to library" button from there. The default directory for iTunes' library is C:\Users\*username*\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media

If it's not there, you can...
I'm so sorry to sound so stupid…but I see no icon in top left corner…neither on my desktop or on the "my passport" program when I "open" it by double clicking. I'm assuming you don't mean the "apple" icon in left corner as none of the choices there are "add file to library". Could you be more specific for me? Again, I apologize for my lack of experience.

My iTunes doesn't have box or gray icon like that. In fact, in my iTunes the upper left corner is the apple icon, followed to the right by iTunes, File, Edit, etc. None of them had "add file to library" but I did find under the "file" heading "Add to Library". But that didn't get me anywhere…when I do that and then select "my passport" under device it has the file for my friend's music but again it still shows it to be empty.

If it's not there, you can check it's location by going to the "advanced" tab in preferences. It'll be the location inside the oversized text box:
