Cannot transfer video files from external hard drive ("Item not found")

I just trashed my old computer and built a new one (moved from Windows 7 to Windows 10). I had quite a few files I wanted to keep, so I stored them all on an external hard drive. I can play the video files in question from the external hard drive, but when I try to copy the files to my internal drive (so that I can store my external safely) the transfer rate quickly drops to zero and then after a few seconds a pop up tells me that the file cannot be found. I know this to not be true since I can still play the files.

Does anyone have an idea of what I'm going through and how to fix it?

Sounds like your disk connection or the disk itself is broken. Most likely your video player is buffering enough that it feeds off the buffer until the drive is back online. Next time you copy, keep the window open and look at the icon. If it starts blinking a bit, you know there's a disk issue.

Most probably your HDD is failing.
My advise would be to boot up Ubuntu from a CD or a flash drive and try to access the drive and transfer all the data you can: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/267999-32-recover-data-mode

Starting with something simple as just attaching the HDD with a different cable may be a good idea.
