I want to use the scanner both for scanning photos and some mounted 35 mm
slides.

Both these scanner have similar resolutions 3200 x 6400, both scan
transparancies, and they have similar prices (4200F GBP 100.00 and 3170 GBP
125.00 or so).

I think the Epson is being discontinued, while the Canon has just been
introduced. The difference in price is not really significant.

The bottom line is: Is there any difference in the quality of scans
produced by these two scanners?

Thanks.

If you decide to go with Epson, you might want to consider the following.
Since it looks like you are paying close to full list price for the 3170,
you should just go for its replacement model, the 4180, which has better
specs. The 3170 is a great scanner for the money but you should get
closeout pricing on it now.
