CANON DC700 UNDERWATER HOUSING CASE FOR A70

I'm considering one of these marine cases for my Canon A70, but its a little
scary wondering
whether they are really water tight. Anyone have any experience with these?
I'd only be using
it for snorkling so nothing of any depth. The only customer reviews I saw,
2 of them, both had
ruined cameras because they leaked, and Canon told them it was not used
properly and didn't
take any blame for a faulty product.

I'd be interested in opinions on other options as well, such as the SeaLife
Reefmaster DC300
underwater digital camera. This is about the max, around $400, that I'd
want to spend for something
I only get to do once a year or so. Havn't seen many other options though,
that weren't much more
expensive and better suited for diving.

Thanks,

Ron

in 99.99% of cases, the fault for leaks lies with the user.

the sealing o-rings need to be inspected properly each and every time the
camera is opened. the o-rings need to be cleaned and re-greased and the
channels they sit in and the surfaces they mate against need to be
fastidiously checked for debris before the case is closed again. ideally
they should be cleaned with a lint free cloth as event the tiniest piece of
hair, lint etc will ruin your day.

i'd be extremely suprised if canon are marketing a faulty product. if in
doubt, test the case without a camera first. this will show one of 2
things....the case is faulty or your assembly / o-ring maintenance is not
good enough. if you do get a leak, check the o-ring on opening the case.
it'll be a safe bet that you'll see water on the 'dry' side.

when my underwater film camera had minor leaks in the past, it was
completely down to me.

check out the olympus range. not sure what they go for in the states, but
housings in the uk start at about £140. given we usually pay in pounds what
you guys get charged in dollars, you should be able to get a decent (5mp)
set up for not much more than your budget. if you check out the forums on
wetpixel.com, there may be answers to the reefmaster question there.

hope that's of some use
