Canon Develops 120 Megapixel CMOS Sensor

Pixel density will be off the charts! Unless Canon managed to break the laws of physics, that 120MP won't mean anything but just another marketing number. Higher pixel density on the sensor means more noise.

Pop your location into the map, zoom in and look at the back of your own head

Probably for military or commercial uses. Do we really want 40 MB JPEGs and 160 MB Raw files for every single picture we take? It'll be annoying and completely overkill for taking pictures of your cat.

We don't exactly need 12MP pictures of cats either but we take them anyway 😛 give me a 120MP camera I will take a picture of myself taking a picture just cause I can 😛

RTA before calling somebody a moron. APS-H = 29.2 x 20.2mm, Mr. Genius!
 
Come on people... 3 people complaining about what they claim is an incorrect sensor size due to one other magazine article. All the additional research I am finding shows that the dpreview article is incorrect with their size.

both support Tom's reported size. Even the photographs indicate it is rectangular, not square like the dpreview measurement would be.

Finally, use some common sense on the measurement. How big is 200 mm in an understandable measurement? It's about 10 inches square, so about the size of a piece of notebook paper! Everything I read points to an error in dpreview, not Tom's.

The 202x205mm sensor is a different topic altogether. It's not an article error in dpreview. There really is a 202x205mm sensor developed by canon. There's even a picture of it in the article. Now, imagine how big the body and lens have to be to use that huge sensor :)

That would certainly put the large sensor into military & commercial use. Canon is certainly keeping in the picture and video game with these latest two developments.

+1. Like said above, this will have a hell of a lot of issues with noise. HOWEVER, if this can be cooled down using a TEC,etc then this very well could be using in some ultra expensive pro level cameras.
