Can anyone give me their opinions on the G3/G5 vs S500? I am looking for
something that is a good auto focus, can do some macros, and easy to
use, the biggest thing being the auto focus.

Thanks for your suggestions.

I'd go with the S500. Small, easy to carry, simple point and shoot, with
some options. Intelligent auto focus, good macro.

Best thing, SIMPLE!

Hi Paula,
I'm personally not familiar with the canon cameras you mentioned, but I use
a Fuji FinePix S7000. I absolutely love it for its simplicity of use, the
brilliant auto focus - I use the auto focus 90% of the time, and it can do
macro and super macro. Goes up to 12 megapixels, has 6 times optical zoom,
and I think it has about 3 or 4 times digital zoom (though I personally
never use digital zoom).
Pricewise - here in New Zealand, it's about $1300.00. You'd need to work
out the exchange rate to where you are to compare....or better still, call a
camera shop and ask them how much.

Cheers,
Darryl.

I've got the s500, and have had it's predecessor, the s230 for a
year. The s500 is a great camera. The autofocus is good, but
sometimes a little tricky with macros - I but I think that's true
with any autofocus camera.

On this page:

the last 7 photos (chickweed thru bloodroot) were done with the s500
(the rest were with the s230).

Have a look at those pages:
a. http://www.steves-digicams.com/2003_reviews/g5.html
b. http://www.steves-digicams.com/2004_reviews/s500.html

It seems to me that the G5 have much better optics (lens) then S500.
Regarding the autofocus, you have to check by yourself (big photo shop) or
have opinion from somebody that have/had both of them.
