I've read the various chains about the compatibility or not of the inks,
and the chains about using BCI3e carts in printers that come with BCI6.

But, I'd like to know if I can use BCI6 carts in my i850, which normally
requires BCI3e? (The 3e carts are becoming harder to find around here.)

TIA

BCI3 and 6 color inks are identical. BCI3bk and BCI6bk are not
interchangeable.

they can't be exactly identical, or they wouldn't change the name...it must
be something, maybe ink formula...?

This was discussed some time ago I think. For simplicity and user
convenience all the cartridges for a printer have the same cartridge
type, so the whole series for this printer is BCI3__ Even if the
cartridge and ink is identical as the BCI6, they would be called BCI3 to
keep things straightforward for the user.

Identical tank and identical ink........ as in - no difference.

there could be just a difference in the cartridge, not the ink in the cart.

nope...that's just the point...carts are identical, only number is different

You find this unusual?

USE ONLY CANON OEM INKS DESIGNED FOR YOUR PRINTER. DO NOT LISTEN TO
MANY OF THE AFTERMARKET JERKS ON THIS NG.

hm...actually...no...

In article SleeperMan says...

The i850 got repackaged as the i560 using the same printhead but BCI6
ink. If there is a difference in ink I haven't seen any mention that it
is significant but many posts saying the 3e/6 CMY carts can be
interchanged without affecting output. The change from 3 to 3e did need
a change of printer driver.

The ip4000 and 5000 use bci3 and bci6 black. One of them is pigment one is
dye. I forget which is which. As for the colour cartridges i don't know.

THE PIGMENT IS BCI-E BK
THE DYE IS BCI6-BK

true. Black 6 is dye and black 3 is pigment. That's OK.
Colors are all dye, new 6 and old 3 series. That's why it's odd...at least
ink formula must be changed a bit.

Interesting about that. Just checked the prices yesterday at local
Sam's. The price for a color pack (all 3: C, Y, M) in BCI6 was only a
buck higher than the BCI3e. Not sure if that is the case at other
retailers.
