Nope. Still does exactly what it is supposed to do, and it is still a great
buy for the functionality. To the best of my knowledge there's not a
similar product so highly regarded.

Then I must have it!
Thanks

I think it's still the tool for the job. I'm a little surprised no
competitor HAS come up with the same functionality at half the price.
But no-one seems to have done so.

Any software with this unit?

Canopus has others, e.g. ADVC-50 & 55, that do only analogue-to-DV
(i.e. not DV-to analogue), and cost less.

None, not even a driver (as explained elsewhere).

Canopus does sell its own line of software, and might offer a bundled price
to buy it with the hardware. But, the ADVD100 itself comes in a box with a
slim booklet -- nothing else.

It does the job, though. And, probably like many people who would use it, I
got various capture/editing/burning software bundled with the DVD burner,
also with the firewire card, and also with the computer itself, not to
mention the Movie Maker accessory with XP. So, I'm not complaining.

I have XP and lots of DVD software, but I'm gonna need a driver.
Is that a download or do I have to shell out more money.

Kindof like ordering a free pizza but paying 20 buck for a box

As others have said, the Canopus ADVC-100 is a hardware device that does not
need a driver. Plug it into the Firewrie port. Capture programs recognize
it as a IEEE1394 source.

Sorry, I missed the part where others said that it does not need a driver.
I did see the post in this thread where a nice fellow said it does not come
with a driver.

Thanks!

Unless you need TBC, for older a problematic tapes, the ADVC-100 is up to
the task. Amazing for the money!

The Datavideo DAC-100 does it, maybe better according to
some reviews, for far less money, have had mine for over
18 months with no problems, and excellent results.

Even a cheap Digital8/DV camcorder with analog passthrough - ~$150 Sharp
VL-Z3U DV Camcorder (www.fatwallet.com/forums/ on that already dead Hot
deal from Jan.) will do the same as the ADVC-100 cheaper and just as good.

One of the nice things under "functionality" about the ADVC100 is the fact
that it can defeat macrovision. I've never had occasion to use my Sony
VX2000 or my Cannon VL75U's pass-through capabilities. Does camcorder
pass-through also defeat macrovision?

Its not nice to tweak the fruit-people.
They are likely doing the best they can. 🙂

My old boss always used to say "you are doing as well
as can be expected" I never knew whether he meant that
as a compliment or as a criticizm. Or perhaps interchangable
depending on the circumstances. 🙂

Just this afternoon I read a review of a piece of hardware
where the reviewer (a Mac user) said he couldn't get the
unit to even function on his Mac, but when he tried it on a
PC "the installation couldn't have been easier" and then
it worked flawlessly.

Nope. You'll get the "tape is copy protected" warning and it'll stop right
there.

Unless it is a really old camcorder. Likely all DV camcorders
were made after Macrovision detection became widespread.

I should have killfiltered on the NNTP Posting Host header, but I've gotten
out of that habit since the premium services started omitting it a few years
ago. It's done now.

If you want software, you could have a look at the Canopus AceDVio
which is a built in PCI card with the ADVC100 engine. I bought the
card to get Adobe DVD Encore for only a small amount more that Encore
on its own, and I got Adobe Premiere Pro and Audtion in the bargain.

The AceDVio does not have all the connections of the ADVC100, by a
mile, but I like it because it doesn't need an external power point
(it needs to be connected to internal power to give power to the
Firewire port) so it's always available. I still have my ADVC100
connected and regard it as an outstanding product that simply does
what it claims to do, without fuss and without drama. The AceDVio,
with the same engine, is also a gem.

I guess I'm not among the "most of us" then because I'd rather exchange
(and have much more respect for) with a total nym than a man/woman _and_
their sock puppet. IMO, there is simply _no_ excuse for using more than
one ID in a forum. If you can't make your point with one nym, you
certainly will be unsuccessful trying to do it with a sock puppet as
well. It's a troll, pure and simple.

I could care less whether someone is posting as a "real" person, whether
they're a corporate CEO or a street urchin posting from a public
library, as I respond to _what_ is posted, not _who_ it comes from.

In this case, I'm proud I'm not in the "most of us" group.

Is there any secret about who is who?
The republicans change justifications in the middle of a war..Dozens of
times, yet we all know who we are dealing with.

When would the DV to analog conversion be useful?
If all you're doing is converting old analog stuff (VHS/laser disk)
to DVD, would you ever need this?

Thanks,
