Question Can'r rename/move some directories and files with odd characters

Hello, I have some directories/files on my external HD that have characters like "<> ." I think i created them years ago on Ubuntu. The problem is that when i try to rename/move them I get the message "the filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect". I read that one solution is to run chkdsk /f but my hd is a 4tb one and there's always a risk with chkdsk... is there any other way (even with some software) to be able to rename them? When I run into this kind of thing, I boot up Linux Mint and do the file management that Windows doesn't want to do. I have it on a USB3 flash drive that boots up in under a minute. It comes in mighty handy for things like this.

Sadly, all our pcs and notebooks have now windows 10. :/ I never used linux before so not sure that solution is viable for me. :/ Any other way? Thanks in advance!
