So I bought an ssd and reinstalled windows on that drive. I wanted to format my old windows drive so I copied my most important files to an external hdd. I now have windows on my ssd and I tried to transfer my files form the external hdd but it's now showing. I did troubleshooting, I turned off energy saving on the USB ports, I updated the driver of the external hdd. In the device manager it recognises the drive, but I can't acces it. Is there any solution that I can do to get my files back?

He didn't say to add the disk as a storage space, just to look to see if it was already in one and to copy the data out of it if it was.

So how & when did you copy those files to the external HDD?
<It sounds like you copied out the files after you install the new windows so they may still be on the old HDD>

Which external HDD is it?
<i'm think its one of those that come with encryption>

Before I installed windows on the ssd the external hdd always showed up and I transferred my files to it before I reinstalled windows. Now it shows up, but it's totally empty. I used EaseUS data recovery and it seems that I can recover my files, but therefore I need a key. Is there a free alternative or another way to retrieve the data?

Okay, bois. Time to start the device. lookup this pc or my pc in the index and right-click it. After that look for manage and click on that. Then go to storage and find the device name. It may ask you to start it up on opening that area. Set it as a partition and you may be good to go.
