I have a hp pavillion and I can't get it to boot anymore. When I press escape to acces the startup menu I only get to see information about my cpu and RAM, not the actual startup menu. I hope to get this fixed as soon as possible as I need my pc for my studies and no longer have a backup.
A few pictures:
The screen where I press esc: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/image/serverpage/image-id/83496i4C8A1F4ECA5D96F4?v=mpbl-1
What I get, but I don't have the blue menu infront, only the black information behind it: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/image/serverpage/image-id/55151iC1C89EA1B1F92EDB?v=mpbl-1

Solution
Yes, that's correct. It's called a 6+2 pin and is the same as a single 8-pin. The card is bad. Contact MSI for their RMA process. Sorry dude I feel for ya 🙁
If you can get a Windows 7 installation or recovery disk, I can walk you through a manual startup repair. The forum rules prevent me from telling you where to get the ISO files however and Microsoft no longer makes them available online.

Will that Computer Setup (F10) option bring you to the BIOS/CMOS settings? If so, does it see the installed hard drive?

What happens if you power it on and don't press anything? It must either give you an error message, launch automatic startup repair or lock up on the windows startup screen. Also check that you don't have any media connected to the computer (USB thumb drive, DVD disc)

You can try tapping the F8 key while booting and get the Windows advanced startup options in which case you can select the option to launch Windows "Automatic Startup Repair"

If I don't press anything it just stays on the hp screen and beeps. I can't get anywhere that would show me the harddrive. I can only get to the two sceens in the pictures(the second one without the blue menu so I can't do anything there either). I've disconnected everything except the sceen mouse and keyboard. I've also tried removing the battery from the motherboard, after reading that somewhere but that didn't help either.

We are getting somewhere...these "beeps"...they are called beep codes. Usually have to do with bad or missing RAM/Video. Obviously the video is not missing. Is there a specific pattern to the beeps like: one long, two short or all short and repetitive?

Has anything changed lately? New hardware or software?

Try booting it with only one stick of RAM at a time. Populate only the slot nearest the CPU

I tried one stick of RAM and it didn't work.
There's one beep followed by two beeps faster after another.
I've added in another harddrive but when it didn't want to boot I disconnected it again. I've also changed the gpu and psu a week ago but it has booted after that. so I don't think they're the problem

Well...are we sure? I get the feeling all this new hardware points to one of them being an issue. That beep code pattern actually sounds like a video card issue. Do you have your previous card to use or is there onboard video? What's the PC model #

Hmm, I'll have to check that out tomorrow, I have other duties t attend to today. Thanks for all your help already. I'll post here if something changes.

I just remembered a time when I couldn't get a system to POST because I forgot to connect the PCIE power connectors to the graphics card. Did you possibly miss that step too? Also, what card is this? What PSU is this? It is possible that your PSU is not supplying enough juice to the card.

This is exactly why system specs should be listed. I guess it's partly my fault for not asking earlier in the thread too. Let us know what you find.

Hey managed to find some more time today.
The gpu is a gtx 970, the psu is antec hcg 620W. I think the problem is driver related(not sure). My previous gpu was an amd radeon hd6500, this one still works. I'm guessing I can't use the gtx because I don't have the drivers but I can't install nvidia drivers when there's no nvidia card installed.
When I look online at how to switch from amd to nvidia they all say remove the amd drivers(which I did), plug in the nvidia card and install the new drivers. But my problem seems to be that I can't start windows in order to install the drivers.

Drivers shouldn't matter at that point. The drivers don't load until Windows is starting at which point there would be a bluescreen. Are you saying the system will boot with the AMD card?? What version/edition of Windows?

The steps for installing a new graphics card are as follows:

1) uninstall all current video drivers and utilities FIRST

2) Shutdown and install the new card

3) install drivers for new card

4) Reboot

I'm using windows 7 and yes when I changed back to the amd card it does boot, I've removed all the drivers shut down the computer installed the gtx and when I reboot I get one long beep and three short ones which I think suggest the gpu isn't recognised

hmm, when I turn the power on the MSI light on the card lights up and the fans start spinning. Does that mean it is getting power and it's just faulty or do I still have hope that it's not entirely correctly powered

my psu only has 6-pin with an additional(seperate) 2-pin pcie connectors I plugged one 6-pin in(without the 2-pin) and a 6-pin with a 2-pin in the 8-pin slot is this the correct way to do it?

Too bad, thanks for your help though
