hi. im having issues with my PC and i need help. the original hard drive was partitioned into 2 parts. the C and the D. the C drive had the OS (windows vista home premium 32 bit) and the D had some files, all of which are fine.

the C drive had some files which cannot be replaced and are of a highly personal nature (to me, my family etc) so i ordered a back-up drive to try to keep them safe. however, the OS began to have issues and failed to boot so i added a stand alone C drive (moving the one with issues down to D, and the part without issues down to E) and had windows 7 professional 64 bit installed. all is operating fine.

HOWEVER i have the issue still with what is now the D drive. i downloaded an add on for the registry to allow me to 'take control' of the D drive, however no matter what i do, i get the 'access denied' message on that drive. can anyone help me get the files out that i need so that i can format or scrub the partition and start it from fresh? i was looking at a data recovery place but it would take me around 2 months worth of salary to be able to afford it.

sorry its such a long post, but im at my wits end.

First off, if it's gonna cost you two months salary you're going to the wrong data recovery company. I'd rarely charge more than a $300 for a case like this.

That having been said, you may be able to access the files using a Linux live build (which ignores Windows security). I'd recommend Knoppix because it's the easiest to use. You can even install it on a USB thumbdrive using this program: http://www.linuxliveusb.com/ (which can also automatically download the latest build for you).

Just setup the CD/DVD/USB and boot from it, copy the files (if it is able to see them) to another volume.

Well, In case of "folder access denied" you can try this. I don't know about D drive access denied.
You can try...
1st Change ownership of folder
1. Right-click the folder, and choose Properties
2. Click the Security tab
3. Click Advanced, then the Owner tab
4. Click edit, and then your username (make sure to check Replace owner on sub containers.)
5. Click Apply, then OK
6. Now, under Permissions, click Change Permissions
7. Click Add, then type in your username and click OK
8. Check the Allow box under Full Control, then click OK
9. Now choose the Replace all child permission checkbox
10. Click OK, then Apply, then close
Now you can fly....
