Can't access my router settings

Hi. I want to access my router settings, but I can't. Connected my laptop to the router, and I saw my default gateway (cmd -> ipconfig). But the problem comes when I type the gateway in the address bar.. nothing happens except ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED (I'm using Chrome). It doesn't ask me for username and password (Which are default and I know them). I would really appreciate some help

Did you try a different browser? The router may not allow admin access via WIFI, have you tried a wired connection?

I am using wired connection. I tried with Explorer, but the same thing happens.

What does the default gateway IP address start with 192.168 ?

It starts with 172.16

That is a public IP address. That is why you can't access it. What make and model hardware are you trying to access?

I'm using a NETGEAR Wireless Router WGR614 v8. I don't know anything about routers, I'm sorry if I'm wasting your time, and thanks for the fast response

Some routers will only allow you access to the admin menus through their own software packages included with the router.

There is a Default Access section on the router, with an address (http://www.routerlogin.net). I tried this too but.. Nothing happens too.
About software packages.... I don't think the router came with anything like that. It also isn't a new router, but not a very old one too.

The user's manual -- http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/WGR614v8_SM_17May07.pdf on PDF page 12 shows that you can use http://www.routerlogin.net Have you tried that?

As I said above, yes I tried. Internet Explorer says : Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage. And Chrome ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED.

I am not sure if the settings can be disabled from my Internet provider, if it is possible I can try contacting them via their support page.

I am starting to wonder if you have either a VPN, or a virus that is altering your default gateway. What is the IP address of your PC? 192.168.x.y or 172.16.x.y ?

As I can see it is 172.16.x.y, and also, before about an year ago, I wanted to do the same thing, but from my old laptop... still nothing happend. The laptop I'm using right now is with newly installed Windows7

My mistake... 172.16.x.y is a private range. Just not used to seeing it.

All the standard things are failing... The next usual step is a factory reset of the router.

I am really really sorry for wasting your time, thanks for all the support provided and the patience. It looks like my router is not a router that I actually own. I got informed it is provided by my internet provider.. I need to buy a router, and I will hopefully. Thanks for the support again.
