Can't boot my external drive

I can use my external drive on my laptop but not on my HP Touchsmart 300
I get these error messages when I boot my PC
messages:
There was a problem start in
Users\Public\{3F8931C1-74A2-4169-A9B3-7A72E2F19232}.dll The specified
module could not be found
This message: JAN20SD Can't Open ACPI kernel Mode Driver

If I need to reinstall my whole system how do I back up my stuff?
Do you have a list of prceddures to get my through the process?

Hi,

Maybe before resulting to something drastic like format, perhaps try downloading the drivers for the external and installing them onto the pc that the drive doesn't seem to work on. If that fails to work then you can take steps from there.

I am trying to solve the driver problem as you suggested. Then I plan to transfer my files etc to the 500 gig external drive with the help of the Emsisoft Tech Support guy with whom I am working.
When Emsisoft tried to fix my "virus problems" I guess some important files were destroyed messing up my system. I still seem to get along ok but the Emsisoft guy says I need a total reformat. I really do not know what has been compromised. Two error reports pop up with every restart.
