Can't boot Win10 anymore with hyperthreading on (dual Xeon)

Hi,
for a while now I have been unable to re-enable my hyperthreading and boot into windows 10.
It loads up to the point where the windows logo appears, then loads a bit more, then reboots... in a loop up to the point where you need to recover.

I can remember in the beginning when I assembled it, to test rendering performance on cinema4D with Vray, I did change between bios HT on and off. But because the actual performance on vray in cinema was better without HT, I left it off for some time now. However I recently switched to Corona renderer but for some reason now I can't get HT back on anymore... windows update?

The guys at the computer hardware store had no solution for me, and I really wanted to see if I can benefit from HT on such a powerful machine, therefore I tried posting here... I feel like I'm missing out on 40 cores... :-(


Here is a quick overview of the components, built in 12/2016 :

Bios has latest version, checked from asus website
msconfig has number of processors ticked off

Have you tried the typical actions: "load optimized values", "clear cmos" ...?

I guess it will not be any consolation but Intel calculates HT's performance increase by 20%, I think it should not go from 10% -15%. In no case are you losing 40 cores!

I don't think hyper threading has anything to do with this. I think it is corrupt data or corrupt windows, driver, updates, etc.... Hyper threading has been around so for very long I do not think that is the issue.

I tried removing the cmos battery for ten minutes but that didn't help.
Bios settings are as default except for enable/disable hyperthreading and boot options. I have no OC going on

Meanwhile , I tried setting the msconfig number of cores to 40, which was the maximum in the list. Then rebooted and in the BIOS activated hyperthreading and booted Windows, but then values were:
device manager: 80 CPU's
task manager: 1 socket, 20 physical cores, 40 logical cores
CPU-Z recognizes only 1 CPU's with 20 physical/40 threads
render a testframe in 5min41
somehow it feels faster (opening windows, C4D viewport C4D material previews, etc...)

When i deactivated hyperthreading again and rebooted windows
device manager: 40 CPU's
task manager: 2 socket, 40 physical cores, 40 logical cores
CPU-Z recognizes 2 CPU's with 20 physical/20 threads for each CPU
render a testframe in 5min54

for the record, I have two CPU's of 20cores/40threads
windows 10 Pro x64 build 1803
