Can't boot windows 7 from external disc drive.

Motherboard: Asus M5a97 EVO R2.0

The external drive doesn't show up once pressing f8. Is there anything I can do?

And how did you get Windows 7 onto the external drive?

By placing the windows 7 disc in the external disc drive. The drive turns on once plugged into a usb port, lights come on, it opens, and it spins for a while but then stops.

Ok, so you're using an external optical drive, that wasn't clear in the original post.

Try going into the BIOS and setting it to boot first from a USB drive.

Yeah, sorry about that. Which option is it, UEFI or Legacy OpROM? There's no option for USB.

Post the specs of your computer. It's impossible to recommend anything without knowing those pieces of basic information.

Well, the option to boot from USB should be in there somewhere according to the manual (http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/SocketAM3+/M5A97-EVO_R2.0/E8045_M5A97_EVO_R2.pdf --> section 3.7, page 3-32).

Without actually using the motherboard for myself, I can't really help any more than this. Maybe someone with this board can chime in.

Press F12 rapidly when boot starts will get you to boot menu to boot from disks or any other device. Win7 and probably win8 too.
