i have a dell xps motherboard that is unlocked as well as a unlocked cpu im running a 0x501h x58 motherboard with a i7 990x and for what ever reason i cannot change the clocks not even in the bios i tried to see if i could get the debug options in the bios using ctrl and the f keys with no success and i dont even have the option to change my ram speed so im stuck at 1066 instead of the 1333 my pc is capable of i cant even change the clocks in intel xtu so when i change the multipliers the cpu stays at 3.46 and i dont have the option to turn off turbo boost either im just saying its a really weird bios saying my other dell xps board has all the options to change clocks and everything but jts a locked bios

First see if there is an Alienware BIOS for that. 2nd issue is Dell sold XPS as locked or unlocked systems with a correcponding BIOS. Try and get the unlocked BIOS version. 3rd try Throttlestop software and just overclock it from in Windows.

X58 dell workstations are very popular for that.
As far as RAM speed goes the memory controller is on the CPU and the i7s run at 1066. The higher level Xeons run at 1333. They all should be running 3 cahnnel setups. That's where the real performance is anyway.

i will try throttle stop but i doubt ill have any luck because set fsb had me limited as well and my ram is 4 sticks 1600mhz and 2 1333 sticks if you or anyone else wanted too know

Throttlestop is completely different than SetFSB. X58 Voltage control is pretty indirect so read the thread. But with an unlocked CPU it works just fine. Pay particular attention to posts by Unclewebb. He's the TS developer so his answers are very reliable. I would expect those to be running at 1066 speed with that CPU. If you get the FSB to move you'll have a little headroom to work with.

for what ever reason my multiplier is locked at 100% wich even though its a unlocked cpu i should be able to increase the clocks but im not have very much luck doing so

i turned the turbo ratio up but its like turbo is off because the cpu wont step above 3.47 ghz no matter how much i increase the multipliers on the turbo ratio

That MB is very similar (but not identical ) to the Alienmware Aurora ALX which is made by MSI Dell#4VWF2 (MSI# MS-7591 v.1.0). Maybe BIOS Mods.com can splice a BIOS together for that. I would upload your existing BIOS and the MS/ AW BIOS to them and see what happens. Do you have the latest BIOS from Dell? Perhaps you don't havwe full support for that CPU?

probably but i downgraded to an older bios that didnt support the 990x and i just swapped back to my otherboard and found out its not wise to use a hyper 212 to oc the 990x so i have to get a better cooler
