Question can't change gpu clock speed with msi afterburner ?

Hello ! absolute noob here ! So yeah I have a 3080 TI ichill x3 which is a factory overclocked version of the 3080TI and well, it seems to overheat.
on some of the more demanding games the game will randomly shut down after several hours of play, then I have to lower the graphics a bit and it works just fine however i'd rather not have my GPU at risk of overheating for every new game, so I decided i'd use MSI afterburner to actually revert the clock speed to the original values. however nothing seems to work :

• when I adjust the "core clock" slider, apply and then save to my profile, the GPU value displayed in MHz is always the same ( 1710 )
• if i restart my PC the modifications i made to the "core clock" slider will be gone, even though I saved it.
• on youtube it seems to work for people ?
• tried messing with the settings to allow voltage control but it doesn't seem to help at all. making a custom curve in the curve editor of the voltage section doesn't change the displayed GPU MHz.

basically the software is ignoring me. except that I made a custom curve for fan speed and that's definitely working ( and even though it helped it's still not enough, had total war 3 kingdoms on ultra crash to desktop after several hours of play )

MSI Afterburner hasn't seen any development (updates, bug fixes etc) for a year now and as it currently stands, development will stop all together.

That's a shame, since MSI Afterburner is de-facto software to OC GPU and it supports so many different GPUs. But all good things must come to an end at some point.

2nd best software for GPU OC would be RivaTuner. But there are others as well,

So, try with different software.

Also, do note that when GPU itself isn't happy with the OC you want to put on it, GPU will revert all modifications back to the factory default. This is a safeguard built in to all GPUs, so that user can't accidentally fry the GPU (e.g by feeding way too much voltage to it).

Oh, well it all makes sense then :') thank you very much for your help ! I will try reverting that "factory" overclock to the standard values for a 3080TI with rivatuner !
And yeah the GPU shouldn't revert the modifications since i'm actually trying to lower the clock speed x)

Do you have it set for Afterburner to start on PC startup? I haven't used it in a few years so don't remember if that is needed.

yes I do, that's the software i use for my fan control
i'm just gonna have to try and find a software that works for my 3080TI since rivatuner won't work either -.-

I use Tweak III which I believe is ASUS. I don't know if it works with non ASUS cards.

I'm not sure about the particulars of your card, but keep in mind that setting the Core frequency offset doesn't mean the video card will actually honor it or can actually do it.
