Cant change my frequency above 60 on a 144 hertz monitor...

Everytime I try to change the frequency above 60 hz I am told that I need a dual link DVI cable, which is exactly what I have. I have a VG248QE by Asus, and an R9 270x so I should definitely be able to handle a higher frequency. When I attempt to change it the screen blurs out.

Im changing it via the monitor settings in control panel

Is your GPU driver up to date?

Dumb questions so please excuse me, but need to get it out of the way.

Are you sure you're using the DVI on your GPU, and not your motherboard?
