New monitor is giving me hell. I bought the LG 27GX790A it's supposed to support up to 480Hz, but I can't get it to run at anything above 60Hz. As soon as I select a higher refresh rate (even just 120Hz), the screen goes instantly black and reverts back to 60Hz on its own after a few seconds. I don’t have to touch anything windows automaticaly reverts the changes or i can open the settings window on the other screen.

Hardware:

  • GPU: Radeon RX 9070 XT (Steel Legend)
  • Primary Monitor (no issues): Zowie XL2546K — 240Hz via DP, works flawlessly
  • Problem Monitor: LG 27GX790A tested on both DP and HDMI

What I’ve Tried:

  • Used DDU in Safe Mode to wipe all AMD GPU drivers
  • Reinstalled fresh AMD Adrenalin drivers
  • Deleted related registry entries after the uninstall to rule out leftover junk
  • Tried multiple known-good DP and HDMI cables
  • Plugged into different ports on the GPU
  • Switched between FreeSync Premium / Basic / Off in the monitor OSD
  • Tried different input modes (DP 1.4 vs 1.2, etc.) in the monitor’s OSD
  • Tested it on a laptop too — same problem: 60Hz works, 120Hz and up = instant black screen
    • On laptop, Windows shows 120Hz as an option, but selecting it bricks the signal and it resets back to 60Hz on its own
  • Windows display settings + AMD software both recognize the monitor

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

Used DDU in Safe Mode to wipe all AMD GPU drivers
What version of AMD's driver are you on?

Hardware:
GPU: Radeon RX 9070 XT (Steel Legend)
Primary Monitor (no issues): Zowie XL2546K — 240Hz via DP, works flawlessly
Problem Monitor: LG 27GX790A tested on both DP and HDMI

Please list the specs to your build like so:
CPU:
CPU cooler:
Motherboard:
Ram:
SSD/HDD:
GPU:
PSU:
Chassis:
OS:
Monitor:
include the age of the PSU apart from it's make and model. BIOS version for your motherboard at this moment of time.

Tested it on a laptop too
Make, model and SKU to your laptop?

Just curious, are you able to operate on the new monitor without the Zowie XL2546K and if the issue persists? If the main monitor's refresh rate is reduced, are you able to get the other displays refresh rate up above 160Hz?

Thank you for your response — it's actually my first time posting here, and I honestly wasn't expecting to get a reply, so I really appreciate you taking the time.

Driver Info:

I'm currently running AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition version 25.6.3 (latest at the time of writing). I installed it fresh after using DDU in Safe Mode to completely wipe all previous AMD drivers.

Important Detail (Before Registry Cleanup):

Before I deleted these registry keys:

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers\Configuration
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers\Connectivity
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers\ScaleFactors

…the AMD driver would detect the LG monitor, but it refused to display an image unless it was cloned with the primary display. Any attempt to use it in extended mode resulted in a black screen.

After wiping those keys and reinstalling clean drivers, I was finally able to get an image in extended mode — but it’s still locked at 60Hz. Any refresh rate higher than that causes an instant black screen, and the system auto-reverts to 60Hz after a few seconds.

Additional Testing:

  • I’ve tested every DisplayPort and HDMI output on the GPU — same result on all of them.
  • Tried running the LG monitor by itself with the Zowie disconnected — issue still happens.
  • Lowering the Zowie's refresh rate (even to 60Hz) doesn't change anything — the LG still blacks out above 60Hz.
  • Also tested the LG on a laptop, but it only offers up to 120Hz refresh rate in settings — still, only 60Hz works without blacking out.

Full Build Specs:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D
  • CPU Cooler: Corsair H150i Elite Capellix (360mm AIO)
  • Motherboard: Gigabyte AORUS X870 ICE
  • RAM: 32GB (2x16GB) G.Skill Trident Z Neo Royal DDR5 @ 6000MHz CL28
  • SSD/HDD: 2x Samsung 990 Pro NVMe SSDs
  • GPU: ASRock Radeon RX 9070 XT Steel Legend
  • PSU: Corsair RM1000x (2021 model, ~3 years old)
  • OS: Windows 11 Home
  • Monitors:
    • Zowie XL2546K – works flawlessly at all refresh rates (up to 240Hz)
    • LG 27GX790A-B – stuck at 60Hz, blacks out at anything higher

Let me know if there's anything else I can test or send over — appreciate the help.

I doubt it's a hardware issue with the computer though that doesn't rule out a potential compatibility issue.

Have you checked to see if there was possibly a firmware upgrade available for the monitor?
I couldn’t find where to download the drivers, but I just found out that I have to use the LG Switch program to update them. I’ll give that a try and let you know how it goes.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D
I'd disable the iGPU in BIOS, then run DDU to remove all GPU drivers(Intel, Nvidia and AMD) then manually reinstall the latest GPU driver sourced from AMD's support site;
https://www.amd.com/en/support/down...eon-rx-9000-series/amd-radeon-rx-9070-xt.html
using Adrenalin 25.6.1.

Motherboard: Gigabyte AORUS X870 ICE
What BIOS version are you on?

Tried running the LG monitor by itself with the Zowie disconnected — issue still happens.
That would lead me to think that your monitor is the issue, considering you couldn't get the monitor to run on the higher resolution stand alone.

I have already uninstalled the gpu drivers from amd i dont have any drivers from nvidia or intel and reinstalled them and deactivated the iGPU and still here also the bios version i think is F6

Are you using the cables the monitor came with/have you tried using them?

If so then I think you've probably got a faulty monitor.
I tried both because I thought maybe the DisplayPort cable was broken. Then I tried HDMI same result. I contacted LG, and they told me to use my old monitor's DP 1.4 cable and to change the OSD settings for input compatibility. Same issue: either 60Hz or a black screen. Honestly, thank you for trying to help, but I think I’ll just return this monitor and go with Asus. They also sell a 1440p 480Hz model. I’ve had problems with LG in the past, and this just triple-confirms why I’ve kept avoiding them.
