Question Can't change resolution to 1440p on Windows 10 for Acer Nitro XV272U Pbmiiprzx

I recently got a used Acer Nitro XV272U Pbmiiprzx and have connected it to my PC to use with my old monitor (ASUS VH238). (See specs below). I am unable to get Windows to display in a resolution of 1440p and have tried various things. I am trying to change these settings by right clicking on desktop > Display Settings > Display resolution. The highest resolution available is 1080p, which makes things blurry. My graphics card only supports mini-HDMI and DVI, you can see full specs here: https://www.geforce.co.uk/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gtx-580/specifications

According to the sticky: "Most 1080p 120+ Hz monitors also have a DVI port as a backup. DVI supports up to 144 Hz at 1920 × 1080, or 60 Hz at 2560 × 1440. " So I should at least be able to get 1440p at 60Hz, correct?

Is there a settings problem? A hardware problem? Compatibility? Please advise, I would appreciate it greatly

Things I have tried:

  • Checked sticky threads
  • Searched for people with similar issues
  • Installing the latest graphics drivers from NVIDIA website/software
  • Installed latest monitor drivers
  • Used DVI to HDMI adapter
  • User mini HDMI to HDMI Adapter
  • Installed latest windows updates
  • Rebooted computer
  • Connected only one monitor at once
  • Connected both monitors at once

You have 2 1080p monitors. They can't do 1440p. Even if you plug a cable that can do 4K on them you still won't be able to go higher than 1080p.

This is the monitor I got used. https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07MQBPMJ2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 If I am not mistaken that is 1440P, yes? It says QHD on the box too. On my order, it also says "Style: WQHD (2560 x 1440) IPS Monitor |"
I only want to display 1440p on the Acer. I am aware that the ASUS cannot perform 1440p.

Edit: I realize that I entered the name wrong in the thread, so I have updated it to Acer Nitro XV272U Pbmiiprzx.

I am sorry but you're right. I only said that because you did post your monitors as so:
ASUS VH238 (1920x1080@60Hz)
XV272U (1920x1080@60Hz)

The XV27U in your post should be (2560x1440@144Hz).

This is copied from Speccy, I did not write that on my own. It is most likely listed as that due to the fact that it is currently displaying at 1080p which is the problem I need help with. It should be 1440p as you say.

How would I determine its a genuine dual-link DVI cable? It is a DVI to HDMI adaptor, will that work? It connects to the DVI port on my graphics card and the HDMI port on my monitor. I had it lying around and can't remember what it is exactly.

As for setting a custom resolution, how would I do that?

If the connector looks like the left side, it's single-link.
If it looks like the right side, it could be either single or dual link. To know, you would have to look at the product description, and even that can be inaccurate sometimes.

DVI to HDMI adapters will only give you single-link.

Custom resolutions are covered in section 6.3 in the pinned thread: https://forums.tomshardware.com/threads/how-to-connect-to-a-120-hz-display.3268285/post-20043091

Thank you very much. I will look into this and see what I can do.

I just realized the monitor doesn't actually have any DVI ports. I'm not sure what I can do now. Is there any way to get it to work the mini HDMI to HDMI cable?
